Our Heritage
150 Years of Coorg Coffee Tradition
Estate Monkeys carries forward a legacy that began over a century and a half ago in the misty hills of Coorg, India's coffee heartland. Our story is rooted in the rich soil of Somwarpet, where coffee cultivation has been perfected across generations.
From Historic Estates to Your Cup
We partner exclusively with Geographical Indication (GI) tagged estates in Coorg — a certification that recognizes the unique terroir, traditional cultivation methods, and exceptional quality that can only come from this specific region. Our coffee comes from two legendary estates:
- Baragalli Estate — Known for its high-altitude arabica with distinctive floral notes and bright acidity
- Puttana Koppalu Estate — Celebrated for smooth, mellow arabica with chocolate undertones
These aren't just farms — they're custodians of Coorg's coffee heritage, where traditional shade-grown methods meet meticulous quality standards passed down through generations.
What Makes GI Certification Special
Coorg produces 35-40% of India's coffee, but not all Coorg coffee is created equal. Geographical Indication certification is India's equivalent to Champagne or Darjeeling tea — it guarantees:
- Single-estate traceability from specific GI-tagged farms
- Traditional cultivation in Coorg's unique microclimate (900-1,200m elevation)
- Strict quality standards that commodity coffee can't match
- Protection of heritage farming practices and regional authenticity
When you choose Estate Monkeys, you're not buying generic coffee — you're experiencing the authentic taste of certified Coorg estates.
Farm-to-Cup Freshness
Our made-to-order roasting ensures that every batch is roasted fresh after you order, preserving the complex flavors developed during Coorg's famous coffee blossom season. We don't warehouse pre-roasted beans — we roast your coffee within days of harvest processing, capturing the estates' terroir at its peak.
The Coorg Difference
Coorg's coffee region in Karnataka is blessed with:
- Ideal elevation and rainfall patterns
- Rich, volcanic soil perfect for arabica cultivation
- Traditional shade-grown methods under native tree canopies
- A 150-year legacy of coffee expertise
This is why Coorg coffee commands premium prices globally — and why our GI-tagged, single-estate beans represent the pinnacle of Indian specialty coffee.
Our Promise
Every bag of Estate Monkeys coffee tells a story — of the estate where it grew, the season it was harvested, the hands that processed it, and the roasting profile that brings out its unique character. We're not just selling coffee; we're sharing 150 years of Coorg's coffee heritage, one fresh-roasted batch at a time.
